Our rating:

Mel Gibson directs and stars in this Oscar-laden epic as William Wallace, the medieval Scottish patriot spurred into revolt against the English when the love of his life (Catherine McCormack) is killed.

He leads his army into battles that become a war, and his advance into England threatens King Edward I's (Patrick McGoohan) throne before Wallace meets his fate, but not before becoming a symbol for a free Scotland. The mix of court intrigue, tender love scenes and stirring battles never flags, and Gibson's film won five Oscars.
