Our rating:

Kevin Costner turned director with this magnificent adventure, in which he plays a cavalry soldier who takes up with the Sioux Indians in their struggle for survival. The movie opens with Costner an inexperienced recruit who asks to be sent on a mission to the far west, "to see the frontier, before it's gone".

Instead of a pioneer settlement, he finds only the majestic, western plains - and a nation of Sioux, who eventually accept him as one of them, even allowing him to marry one of their women(Mary McDonnell).Trouble results when Costner must confront his identity as a member of the U.S. Army, which has embarked on a ruthless push west. Stunningly photographed and enormously moving, this film places Costner in the top ranks of actors-turned-director.
