Our rating:

Mike Hodges' kitsch update of the 1930s comic strip and film series, starring Sam J Jones. American football star Flash Gordon (Jones) is transported, along with the beautiful Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), by Dr Zarkov (Topol) into the extraterrestrial realm of the most evil ruler in the universe, the Emperor Ming (Max von Sydow). Only by uniting those under Ming's merciless rule to join his revolution can Flash save Earth from destruction. The unashamedly over-the-top Queen soundtrack is matched by Danilo Donati's effervescent production design.

Also starring Brian Blessed as the chief of the Hawkmen, Timothy Dalton as the leader of the Treemen, and Ornella Muti as Ming's daughter, whose lascivious designs on Flash are just one of the challenges he must overcome if he's to end Ming's tyranny.
