Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939, Robert Donat, Greer Garson)

Our rating:

Robert Donat is perfectly cast in this story, based upon the James Hilton novel, about a shy English schoolmaster. Some critics feel the film has aged; though it might be a bit slow-moving, the solid production values prevail. Garson gives a skilled performance as the only person who gets the schoolmaster to overcome his shyness.

There is good support from Paul Henreid (billed here as Paul von Hemreid), Judith Furse, Austin Trevor, John Mills, and Terry Kilburn.

Academy Award: Donat, best actor Nominations:best picture; Wood, best director; Garson, best actress; Eric Maschwitz, R.C. Sheriff, and Claudine West, screenplay.
