Our rating:

Based on C.S. Forester's novel The Gun with Napoleon's Iberian campaign providing an epic historical backdrop to a romance between Grant and Loren (who apparently were carrying on off-camera as well as on screen) while Sinatra provides a brooding presence as a Spanish guerrilla struggling against unforgiving terrain to wage war against the French.

A splendid looking and expensive film which may not be Stanley Kramer at his best (On the Beach, Judgement at Nuremberg) but the film has plenty to admire.
