ABC Australia’s flagship factual series Australian Story will spotlight Sue-Yen Luiten’s deeply personal mission to Vietnam, as she seeks answers about her origins fifty years after the end of the Vietnam War. The installment is set to air Monday, May 26, at 8:00 PM.
Luiten, who was adopted from Vietnam by an Australian couple as a baby, has spent her life piecing together her past. Her journey has also led her to establish Vietnam Family Search, an organization dedicated to aiding other adoptees in their efforts to connect with their birth families.
The episode tracks Luiten and her group’s travel to the Mekong Delta, where they provided DNA kits to Vietnamese mothers. The initiative brings with it the community’s strong anticipation that these genetic tests might finally link adoptees with their biological relatives.
Viewers will also hear from Barton Williams, a friend and fellow adoptee, who speaks to the unique bond among those who have walked similar paths. Luiten herself describes the trip as a life-altering experience, one that cultivated a significant sense of community among individuals searching for their roots.
Jennifer Feller and Marc Smith produced the segment for Australian Story.
