Birthday Run, The (Sunday Night Theatre ITV 5 Dec 1971)

In The Birthday Run the Clarke family embark on one of their traditional cycling trips – this time grandad leading them on a mystery trip into the countryside. They quickly find though that the times are a-changing and the arrival of motorways and cars and fumes are spoiling things somewhat.

Writer Hopcraft it turned out was not a cyclist himself, telling the TV Times “I tried once, on my brother’s. That was shortly before it was stolen from the vestry of the Methodist chapel.”

classic quote
“just as soon as we get off this dual carriageway.”
