Champions | 1984 | John Hurt, Jan Francis

John Hurt is Bob Champion, the real-life jockey who, inspirationally, managed to overcome cancer to win the Grand National. Thankfully Hurt seems as interested in portraying the great man’s character flaws as in just providing a performance that goes with the legend. Alas, director John Irwin feels obliged to mould the whole thing into a celebration of courage and as such goes straight for emotional manipulation of the audience. As if the basic story was not powerful enough.
