Robert Donat stars as a devoted doctor who labors over treating Welsh miners infected with tuberculosis but ends up treating rich London patients at the risk of losing his faith in himself.

The death of a close friend shakes him out of his slump and he returns to the cause of the poor. Emlyn Williams not only appears on screen in The Citadel, but he also contributed to the screenplay; however, he was not included with the other writers when the film’s screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award.
