Unforgettable Russell Harty, The (ITV-1 2012, Michael Parkinson, Janet Street Porter)

A long overdue tribute to presenter Russell Harty who had his own popular chat show on ITV and then BBC throughout most of the 1970’s and 80’s.

This half hour entry in the Unforgettable strand looked at his early years as a schoolteacher, his love of both the celebrity life and life in his rural Yorkshire home.

There were contributions from family and friends, including the likes of Michael Parkinson and Janet Street Porter.

Harty died from an Hepatitis related illness in 1988.

The previous evening BBC4 screened an episode of his chat show from 1982 – typically it was the infamous one with Grace Jones (she took umbrage at Russ’s line of questioning and got up and thumped him).
