Charles Laughton excels himself as the drunken beachcomber seducing a spinster in the Dutch East Indies. A long way from his usual roles, such as Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty, Laughton fearlessly portrays his vulnerable character with heart-felt sincerity.
While the story, based on a W. Somerset Maugham tale, takes a couple of predictable turns too many, Laughton, playing opposite real-life wife Elsa Lanchester, makes their on-screen relationship fizz with excitement and the humour bite.
